Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a child. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good fit there. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time she was already making her debut on television in the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
